As a result, an accurate diagnosis often requires the use of diagnostic tests, which allow a veterinarian to evaluate the chemistry of your pet’s blood or urine or look at images of your pet’s internal organs and structures to determine what is causing your pet’s illness. One diagnostic tool, which is very useful in veterinary diagnostics, is ultrasound or sonography.
What Is Ultrasound?
An ultrasound uses sound waves to create a video-like image, called a sonogram, of a pet’s internal structures (organs, other soft tissues, and bones). An ultrasound allows a veterinary specialist to view your pet’s organs and circulatory system working in real-time to evaluate their function. Ultrasound can also be used to detect irregularities, evaluate the formation and function of internal structures, diagnose issues like tumors and growths or to locate an ingested foreign object, without the need for invasive exploratory surgery.
What to Expect During Your Pet's Ultrasound Appointment
Quick, non-invasive, and painless, ultrasounds can typically be completed without the need to sedate pets or administer anesthesia. During the appointment, our veterinary specialist will apply a gel to the part of your pet which will be imaged and then gently move the wand of the sonography machine over your pet’s skin, producing an image of your pet’s internal structures.
